EM, or "effective microorganisms", consists of 100 different naturally occurring earth bacteria, fungi and yeasts. The mixture was patented by a Japanese professor who investigated ways to optimize agriculture during the 1980s. He discovered that different types of bacteria reinforce each other and that there are synergies between different microorganisms.

Today, this concoction has led to a global range of products known as effective microorganisms used in agriculture, forest, water purification, waste and greenhouse cultivation. More information  www.agritonsverige.se

  1. The first is the dominance of beneficial microorganisms over pathogens. Unfortunately, because of the environmental conditions and the amount of pesticides in our society, more and more "bad" bacteria are allowed to dominate, because the "good" germs are being wiped out by our craving for sterile environments. By continuously treating the stable environment with EM, it reduces the risk of disease. For example, a horse with sick or problematic skin has a skin flora that is not in balance. Thanks to the dominance of the good microorganisms, skin fungus can be eliminated without relying on aggressive products.
  2. Stage two in the function of EM is fermentation. In order to prevent the manure from rotting, the substrate is treated with EM so that the fermentation process is driven in the right direction. Fermentation is an anaerobic process (without oxygen). This process starts already in the box. EM supports the function of good bacteria to facilitate this fermentation.

By spraying Microferm and sprinkling Vulkamin (volcanic powder) into the bedding, the ammonia is bound and unwanted pathogenic bacteria are dominated. Air quality is improved and hooves get a healthier surface. When the ammonia smell decreases, there is a reduction off flies and parasites.

Another advantage of using Vulkamin in manure is the rich source of nutrients, trace elements and soluble silica acids. These components feed the soil when the sludge spreads.

  1. Spray Liquid EM/microferm (ratio 5/100 liters of water) on the stall floor.
  2. Sprinkle a layer of Vulkamin in the bottom of the bed 250gr/sqm (ie 3kg for a 12 sqm box and 2.25 kg for a 9 sum box)
  3. Apply a thick layer of litter/straw. Do not use woody material because it is more difficult to ferment.
  4. Spray Liquid EM/microferm (ratio 5/100 liters of water) over the bedding material.
  5. Spread the Vulkamin on the litter/straw twice a week, add a little extra Vulkamin on the wetter spots. Dosage: For a box of 9 sqm: 750gr per time and for a box of 12 sqm: 1 kg per time
  6. Spray Liquid EM/Mikroferm (5/100l) over the material 3 times per week. Dosage: For a 9 sqm box: spray 1.5 liters of solution at a time. For a box of 12 sqm: 2 liters of solution.

Tip: Wash out the feed bucket, salt-stone holder and spray the entire environment regularly with liquid EM.

Requirements for 5 tonnes of horse manure:

* Many have succeeded with smaller amount of Microferm, but to be on the safe side we recommend as above.

Method:

  1. Distribute all the ingredients over the fertilizer stack.
  2. Mix thoroughly
  3. Protect the heap and leave airtight for at least ten weeks.
