"Farming in the open countryside"

We want to preserve a living agriculture and we are working to ensure that it continues for generations to come.

Agriculture covers about 150 hectares and is farmed today by Jan-Erik Tärnström.

Cereals are primarily cultivated with wheat as the largest and most important crop, followed by oilseeds (oilseed rape and flax), legumes (peas), grassland for horses and animal feed. The open field of land spreads beautifully down towards Lake Mälaren and runs between forested hillocks.

Jan-Erik is a agronom with more than 30 years of experience in both conventional and organic farming. Jan-Erik also tends the land on other farms on the peninsula such as Lennartsnäs, and previously also Aspvik and Frölunda Gård. Jan-Erik and his family live in the north wing and he is engaged in other parts of the ruling of the farm.

The ambition is to restore and re-vitalise parts of our agricultural land that has been worn down after many generations of use. This is especially the case where previous lawn plantations have been sown.

Experiments have started to ferment manure and other organic waste using EM (Effective Microorganisms). Since 2021 the farm is part of the pilot project Swedish Carbon Storage to test different methods of storing more carbon in agricultural soils. You can read more about the project on the farm here.

EM consists of probiotic lactic acid bacteria, photosynthesis bacteria, actinomyceter, yeast and mould fungi. The fermentation and interaction between these groups creates a variety of bioactive substances such as enzymes, amino acids, vitamins and antioxidants.  Microbes also release organic acids that break down soil and stone that reach the plants as nutrients. EM is growth enhancing and invigorating and the live photosynthesis bacteria help to bind nitrogen and carbon dioxide.

The goal is to strengthen the micro-life in the soil and thereby make the soil more fertile, robust and better equipped to cope with climate fluctuations. During 2019, several projects are being started with the aim of awakening life in the earth and creating a more stable ecological system.
